I grew up in a creative household. My mother was a teacher of grades 4-6 and was always in pursuit of new, inventive ways to stimulate her students' (and own children's) minds. My father was a principal with an extensive background in special education giving him a special sense for communicating in very adaptive and unique ways. Growing up, we (my mother, father, brother, and sister) spent as many summers as I can remember in a quaint cabin in the northeast region of Vermont. No TV. No movies. Just imagination and, literally, an old transistor radio.

Writing for me is like stepping into a lucid dream. I love getting lost in different worlds, lost in the psyche of different characters, and slowly -- at times painfully so -- building a novel from the first word on the page to the last. Rest assuredly, while you read this, I have a cup of coffee in my hand (or a beer as the picture would suggest...stay thirsty my friends), day-dreaming up another world of hopeful characters full of dark intentions, and plot lines riddled with disaster and twists.

I met my beautiful wife in Miami, FL, while we were both attending the same Masters program to become Physician Assistants. She was far smarter than I was, and, yes, I got very lucky meeting her! After graduation we got married; after marriage we moved to Duluth, MN; and after the move we started our careers and eventually settled in St. Paul, MN.  We now have two gorgeous, feisty, strong-willed (to put it nicely) girls that we are very proud of. My wife is my rock. She is also a fan of dark thrillers and offers a lot of what she calls feedback (I call criticism) of my novels.

The first J. T. Riggen novel
The first J. T. Riggen novel

My first novel, Uptown, was a crime thriller published in 2013. It received the certificate of "Indie Reader Approved" by Indie Reader Magazine. It's since been removed from publication as I'm fine-tuning the manuscript and expanding some of the content. If the first novel received high-quality reviews, imagine what the second will bring.  I anticipate its release summer of 2018.  Stay tuned and join the newsletter for updates.

My newest novel, The Chaos of Change.  Check out the NOVELS tab to catch a glimpse of what this epic, cross-national, political thriller is all about! It's already received distinction among critics, earning a 5-star seal-of-approval from Readers Favorite Books, Underground Certified badge from Underground Book Reviews, and a seal-of-approval from Midwest Books. Freetown: A Series of Thriller Short Stories

Freetown takes place on a Native American reservation. The idea for Freetown was born one night while I was working as a Physician Assistant in Emergency Medicine up on a reservation. The stories are short...but they are addictive! Buckle in and enjoy the ride! Book 1 and 2 are currently available through Amazon.
